We believe every one of us knows someone battling cancer, lost the fight against cancer, or is a cancer survivor.Approximately 39.5% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes (based on 2015–2017 data). Early detection and prevention are crucial in this battle, and our school made steps to ensure our students understand this.On Thursday, October 26th, we organized the ‘Cancer Awareness Talk’ for all NIS High School students (Grade 9-12). Our guest speaker was Dr. Thamir Alkasab, an Oncologist as well as a parent at NIS.He shared his knowledge as an expert and gave our students important advice regarding early detection and how to deal with this diagnosis in their families or communities. During his lecture, he highlighted some of the common myths surrounding breast cancer and explained the medical facts that allowed our students to better understand the disease.Ana, a Grade 9 student, said, “I learned a lot and was surprised by most of the myths presented”. Ana believes it’s a great idea to take part in sessions like this because they allow students to understand what cancer does to our bodies, how it affects it and what they can do to prevent or control it.Our school has also supported the Al Jalila Foundation and Brest Friends in PINKtober. Our students participated in the fundraising activities and exceeded the expectations by collecting 1330 AED for the foundation. We are very proud of the effort our amazing students put in, and honored to support the Al Jalila Foundation and their cause.
